Although runners and cyclists know the importance of stretching, most of us hate to do it. However, with increased flexibility, mobility, as well as balance, chance of injury decreases and times can improve. The most common type of running and cycling injuries are caused by muscular or structural imbalance.
Enter yin and deep stretch yoga. While most exercises – including running and cycling – build muscle (yang), the yin style encourages the relaxation of the muscles. In deep poses that are held for long periods (3-5 minutes), the muscles are able to elongate and connective tissue is repaired. The yin practice helps energize the parasympathetic nervous system that is so often ignored when we stimulate our sympathetic nervous system in other exercises.
This workshop will teach you a variety of stretches and poses you can do at home and integrate into your running, cycling or other workout. Specific focus includes the IT band and hamstrings, releasing the psoas muscle, hip openers, as well as those nagging spots in your neck, shoulders and back. Whether you are new to running and cycling or have logged a lot of miles, this workshop will help you stay injury-free and feel better!
Your instructor, Kimberly Kayler, RYT-500, has completed more than 100 races during the last decade and understands a runner’s body and mind. Her yoga teacher certification and experience specialized in working with athletes needing the benefits of yin and a deep stretching program.
